The 54321 grounding technique, also known as the 5-4-3-2-1 method, is a mindfulness exercise used to manage anxiety and panic attacks. It involves engaging all five senses to ground yourself in the present moment.

  • 5 things you can see: Look around you and name five objects or colors you can see.
  • 4 things you can touch: Notice four items you can feel, such as the texture of your clothing or the floor beneath your feet.
  • 3 things you can hear: Listen for three distinct sounds in your environment.
  • 2 things you can smell: Recognize two scents, which might require you to move around a bit if you're in a place with limited scents.
  • 1 thing you can taste: Focus on the taste in your mouth, such as the flavor of food you've eaten recently or the taste of your tongue.
